Why scooter
dashing works

Downtown is where two wheels earn their keep. Orders cluster close together, traffic stops and starts, and a car can spend a good chunk of every dash hunting for somewhere legal to park. A scooter or moped skips most of that, and covers more ground than a bike.

Move Faster

Dashers on two-wheeled devices spent around 15% less time getting from offer acceptance to store arrival than Dashers delivering by car.*

Skip the Car Costs

No parking garage, no gas station detours. A scooter or moped can cost less to run than a four-wheeled vehicle.

Growing Demand

Deliveries on two-wheeled devices grew nearly four times faster than car-based deliveries in big cities like Seattle and San Francisco.*

*Data from DoorDash's 2026 Two-Wheeled Progress Report. Efficiency reported for dashers using two-wheeled devices in the top 20 US and CA cities for deliveries in comparison to dashers using cars.

What you save
without a car

The costs that quietly eat into a driving dash mostly shrink on two wheels.

Parking

No garage and no meter hunt. Pull up close to the merchant and go.

Upkeep

Smaller parts, smaller bills. Routine maintenance on a scooter generally runs below what a car costs to keep on the road.

Getting rolling

A scooter or moped usually costs less up front to buy or rent than a car does.

Scooter gear and setup

You don’t need much. Dashers who ride tend to mention a few pieces of equipment:

  • An insulated bag that sits flat and straps down. Food arriving intact is what keeps your Customer Rating healthy.

  • A rear rack or secure mount, so the bag isn’t on your lap or hooked over a handlebar.

  • A phone mount, so you’re never holding your phone while riding.

  • A helmet that meets your state’s requirements.

  • A lock, for the minutes you’re inside a merchant.

  • Lights and reflective gear. Dinner is one of the busiest windows, and most of it happens after dark for a good part of the year.

  • Weather layers. A scooter handles rain better than a bike, but you’re still outside.

Staying safe while scooter dashing

Scooter and moped rules change from state to state, and sometimes from city to city. It is worth confirming what applies where you ride.

Know the rules where you ride

Check your state DMV and your city's transportation site before your first dash, and again if you start dashing in a new market. Things to look up:

  • Helmet requirements

  • Which license class your specific vehicle needs

  • Whether bike lanes, bus lanes, or highways are open to your vehicle

  • Where you can legally stop for a pickup
